KMU's College of Creative and Engineering (Dean Cha Pil Ryung) has successfully completed a short-term study abroad trip to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as part of the Sungkok Global Exposure (SGE) program in the summer of 2024.

The SGE program is a course in which students earn a certain number of credits by participating in various activities such as project work and cultural experiences at overseas universities that have signed sisterhood agreements with our university. Every year, the College of Creative Arts and Engineering provides opportunities for students during the summer vacation period.

From Sunday, July 28 to Saturday, August 10, 23 professors and students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Lee Hyun Jin, Park Tae Jun, Department of New Materials Engineering, and Oh Chang Kook, Department of Construction Systems Engineering, participated in the “A Global Learning Experience in Malaysia” program at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). During the two-week program, the participants attended lectures by professors, toured laboratories and conducted experiments, interacted with local students, and experienced cultural activities.

The students visited the laboratories of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to observe demonstrations by researchers and conduct hands-on experiments. They conducted and presented their experimental results, including the Jominy Quench Test to evaluate metal hardness changes and heat treatment effects, CAD/CAM modeling and CNC machining exercises, and thermodynamic experiments to measure the calorie and carbon production of different materials.

The participants also had the opportunity to listen to and summarize lectures by faculty members from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The lectures, such as Principles and Applications of Microporous Sound Absorbing Materials (Dr. Desmond Daniel Chin Vui Sheng, Department of Mechanical Engineering), Low Temperature Plasma and Mushroom Growth (Dr. Norhayati Ahmad, Department of Materials Science and Engineering), Fifth Industrial Revolution and Sustainability (Dr. Yeong Che Fai, Department of Electronics Engineering), and Laws of Thermodynamics and Principles of Air Conditioning (Dr. Muhammad Faiz Hilmi, Department of Mechanical Engineering), helped the participants understand engineering in various fields.

Together with their UTM student buddies, the students participated in various off-campus activities to interact with local students and experience Malaysian culture.   They visited a pineapple plantation at the Agri-Tech Park, toured the largest petrochemical industrial complex in Southeast Asia at Petronas, and explored the city of Kuala Lumpur with local students to broaden their international exposure and enhance their global competencies.

Ji Sang Wook(Construction), who participated in the SGE program at UTM in the summer of 2024, said, “I was able to develop my global collaboration skills by working with students of various nationalities,” “Listening to special lectures on other majors made me think about how I could connect with my major and broadened my academic horizons,” and “I was afraid of presenting in English at first, but I gained confidence that I would be able to do well if I went abroad in the future.” He expressed his hope that juniors would participate in the SGE program in the future and not miss out on good opportunities.
