My Life at Kookmin University: A Journey from India to Seoul

From the quiet town of Attingal in India to the bustling heart of Seoul, ranked the 10th best city in the world, my journey has been nothing short of extraordi- nary. I joined Kookmin University (KMU) for a Combined Masters and Doctoral (PhD) program in Mechanical Engineer- ing, fresh out of my undergraduate studies. Winning the Overseas Excellent Researchers Scholarship brought immense joy and pride not only to me but to my family as well.

The peace of mind it gave, knowing that my funding was secured, removed a major hurdle and allowed me to fully focus on continuing my academic dreams. Completing my bachelor's degree and applying for the PhD program in the same year was exciting but also quite hectic. The selection process was intense, and the visa application added to the pressure. Because of some delays, I missed the start of the fall semester and arrived a bit late. But

KMU was extremely supportive, making my transition smooth and without worry.

One of the highlights of my experience so far has been dormitory life. I never imagined that sharing a room with students from different parts of the world would be such an enriching experience. It’s amazing to wake up every day and interact with friends from various cultures, learning so much from them outside the classroom. Friendships that I have formed here have broadened my perspective, making me feel like I am not just studying in Korea but embracing a truly global community.

KMU’s facilities are outstanding. Whether it’s the library, research  Smart Refrigeration and Control Laboratory labs, or even the recreational spaces, everything is designed to make student life comfortable and productive. From day one, the faculty and administration made me feel at home, providing all the guidance I needed as an international student.

Some people often ask me, “Aren’t you too young for a doctoral program?” My answer is simple, “With the right supervisor, supportive lab mates, and an institution like KMU that truly values international students, age is just a number.” The key is having a network that believes in you and pushes you to succeed, the respect and admiration I receive when I introduce myself as a ‘Bagsa Hagsaeng’ (PhD student) is something I cherish, it feels like a recognition of not just my hard work, but the dreams I have carried with me from India.
In just a month, KMU has already become more than a university to me it’s a place where my ambitions are nurtured and where I am growing in both academically and personally.

As I continue this incredible journey, I feel grateful for the opportunity to study in such a dynamic environment, surrounded by amazing people. KMU has not only welcomed me with open arms but has also empowered me to chase my dreams without hesitation. I can’t wait to see what the future holds in this vibrant city, and I look forward to making the most of my time here. City of Seoul, with all its energy, diversity, and warmth, feels like the perfect place for me to grow into the best version of myself.
