Jang Jeong-yun, Kim Do-un, Lee Ye-eun, and Jeong Bo-min, students in the Department of Construction Systems Engineering at our university (Advisor: Shin Ju-young), won the Best Paper Award at the Undergraduate Paper Competition held during the 2026 Annual Conference of the Korean Society of Water Resources (May 20–22, 2026).

The title of the winning paper is “Long-Term Hydrological Time Series Forecasting Considering Latent Long-Period Behavior,” which proposes a long-term forecasting model that explicitly reflects the long-period variability inherent in hydrological time series data. To overcome the limitation of existing hydrological prediction models—which focus on learning short-term patterns and thus fail to adequately reflect long-period behavior—the study introduced a new time series analysis framework that accounts for latent long-period components, aiming to improve the accuracy of long-term hydrological predictions.

This award is particularly significant as it recognizes outstanding achievements in tackling the specialized research topic of hydrological time series analysis at the undergraduate level. Against the backdrop of increasing uncertainty in water resources due to climate change, this achievement is seen as further proof of the research capabilities of our university’s Convergence Water Resources Engineering Laboratory, which contributes to strengthening long-term hydrological forecasting capabilities.
