Kookmin University’s Graduate School of Comprehensive Arts (Dean Kang Kyung Mo) is launching the “Art Mediation” major—the first in Korea to feature “art mediation” as its official name—for the first semester of the 2027 academic year, with the aim of cultivating professionals in culture and the arts who bridge the gap between art and people. Through the establishment of this new major, Kookmin University’s College of Arts plans to increase public access to art and cultivate professionals capable of expanding social communication and cultural arts services through art as a medium.
The Art Mediation major operates a practice-oriented curriculum that reflects the “field cycle of planning, execution, and evaluation,” grounded in the concept of “cultural mediation (médiation culturelle),” the Charter of Arts and Culture Education (EAC), and a solid theoretical foundation in modern and contemporary art history and art criticism from both Eastern and Western traditions. Graduates can pursue careers in various fields of culture and the arts, such as museum educators, docents, cultural and arts education specialists, museum-based art therapy professionals, and independent art mediation planners.
Professor Ahn Hyeri of the Department of Fine Arts at Kookmin University, who has conducted ongoing research in the field of art education, serves as the program chair, and the faculty includes experts who have led educational and communication initiatives in various cultural and artistic settings, including art museums. Professor Ahn Hye-ri, the program chair, stated, “As art museums and cultural spaces expand, there is a growing need not only for curators and teachers but also for new professionals who connect artworks with people.” She added, “We will train art mediation specialists tailored to the field and actively support them so they can thrive in various cultural and arts institutions and settings.”
The curriculum’s main components include art mediation theory, the design and evaluation of cultural and arts education programs, an understanding of museum education, art communication techniques, art therapy and program research, and art communication techniques. In particular, the program plans to solidify students’ expertise and strengthen the practical skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship through the “Art Mediator Capstone Project” and “Professional Portfolio and Entrepreneurship Seminar.” It also plans to expand exchanges with domestic and international experts to support students in experiencing diverse cases of cultural and artistic mediation and broadening their expertise. Meanwhile, the Art Mediation program at the Graduate School of Comprehensive Arts will accept applications from new students from Tuesday, November 3, through Friday, November 13.
