The research team composed of Professor Yeong-rak Doh, Ji-hye Oh in the doctorate course, and Su-ji Yang in the master’s course of the Department of Bio & Nano Chemistry developed high-efficiency white light source that enables color tuning by combining 4 types of phosphor namely, red, amber, green, and blue. Recently, LED that displays long life and less power consumption has stepped into the limelight as high-efficiency lighting. Significance of this study can be found as it analyzed the effect of LED light to health.

It was conceptualized by the fact that the disturbance in circadian rhythms can be reduced by cold white color during daytime and warm white color during nighttime according to the diurnal rhythm of the sun. If we are exposed under cold white light a lot during the evening, the secretion of melatonin that is a type of hormone related to biorhythms is suppressed and as a result, it disturbs deep sleep. Based on such fact, the research team revealed that biorhythms can be maintained to the maximum by controlling the color of light to be used for lighting according to the circadian rhythm. The research team is currently producing a sample light and reported that it will be commercialized in three years. Also, this LED is shown to exhibit outstanding efficiency compared to the existing LED in a section with certain temperature as visual efficiency increases about 1.5 times (more than 96 lm/W). Professor Doh explained, “We successfully developed high-efficiency white LED that is closer to natural light and this LED satisfies both efficiency and color quality while minimizing disturbance in circadian rhythms and effectively maintaining the rhythm.”

This study was conducted through the senior researcher support project (leap) that is promoted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and National Research Foundation of Korea, and the research outcome was posted in the online ‘Light, Science, and Application, which is an international journal published by the Nature Publishing Group (NPG), on the 14th.
