[Letter From a Freshman]
Though I Came Late…
- 09.12.02 / 조영문
I got into college 2 years later than my friends. In high school, because of the college entrance examination, I was always gloomy and I had many personal hardships. High school life was the darkest period in my 22 years. I didn’t realize that it was necessary for me to go to college because I always thought about everything pessimistically. No, actually, I didn’t want to go.
While my friends went to college to realize their dream, I had part-time job. At first, I thought, ‘It is better not to go to the university.’ However, I became envious of them when I heard about their college life. My friends were wearing beautiful clothes, dating, and enjoying campus life while I was working hard all day long. They talked about their petty worries. Suddenly, those worries seemed interesting. I felt regret that I wasn’t doing the same things as they were, so I put an end to my part-time life and started preparing for the exam. Finally, I made it into KMU.
Even though I entered the university later than my friends, it was more interesting than I had expected. There were people from every part of Korea, with unique personalities, some with a similar hobby as me, and also foreigners. I was excited to meet each new person. I am satisfied with the freedom that I couldn’t feel in my high school life. Furthermore, I have tried to do things that I really want to do.
First, I joined a movie club because I like to watch documentaries. During my time in the club, we hold a movie festival and made movies by ourselves over the summer holiday. It was marvelous that all the story-making, screen set-up and performance were carried out by our own hands. I probably would have been happier if we had made a documentary, but making a movie was also a fresh experience.
I applied for the Kookmin Press in my second term. When I was young, I won a writing contest, and my name was printed in the newspaper. Now, I recall that I was really excited that my name was reported then. Having my writing and name in the newspaper is something to be proud of. Also, due to the fact that I’m curious, I like to meet new people and learn new things. That’s the reason I joined the KMU Press. Because I’m a cub reporter, I have written only short articles, but, in my opinion, joining the KMU Press was the best thing I did this year as a freshman.
Others often tell me, “You went to university late, so you have to do everything more quickly than others.” When I was in high school, I was tired about having a hasty mind. I would like to tell the ones who say that to me, “Turn back as you hurry, or slow down!”
There are many things I must do and try to do, and so my freshman life is precious. Even though I got back on the last track, I will do my best instead of being anxious.
