Graduate students Choon-ho Park (Biomedical Engineering, ‘11) and Myoung-ock Cho (Mechanical Engineering, ‘10) were awarded the bronze prize for submitting a smart phone-based portable diagnostic device (Mobile Smart Scope) for exhibition at the 2011 Seoul International Invention Fair. The fair, hosted by the Korea Invention Promotion Association, was held during first four days of December.

This is the general exhibition that the Patent and Trademark Office, WIPO, IFIA and several patent information and technology transfer institutions offer to inventors from all over the world for the promotion of inventions, as well as technology transfer and business opportunities, by allowing them to participate together. Mobile Smart Scope won a bronze medal among over 650 inventions submitted from a total of 30 countries.

Prior to this the two students, belonging to the biomechanics laboratory led by Professor Joong-kyung Kim from the Dept. of Mechanical Systems Engineering, won the Best Paper Award for presenting a paper entitled ‘Measurements of air concentrations of asbestos fibers using an HTM-based device for automatic counting of asbestos’ (Authors: Myoung-ock Cho, Sung-hee Yoon, Choon-ho Park, Hwa-taek Han and Jung-kyung Kim), which suggested a new asbestos detection method at the 8th Annual Conference of Korean Society for Indoor Environment held in Jonghap Hall at Yonsei University Medical Center this past September 22.

Earlier this year they were chosen as Youth Foundation CEO’s supported by the Small & Medium Business Corporation, and these students also founded the corporation ㈜패이스, as co-representatives. In addition, Choon-ho Park received the honor of an Excellence Award at the 1st App Development Contest of INAVI Apps held recently.

For the future Choon-ho Park and Myoung-ock Cho plan to strive for research and development, developing the innovative smart phone-based remote diagnosis system for global healthcare with the aim of utilizing it in improving medical and environmental systems.
