Kookmin University’s (KMU) department of Electric Engineering established a drone studio and an Elec shop in Building 7. What was previous a graduate lab is now a place where students can practice.

The drone studio is a place that furthers KMU’s educational goal of training students as practical and talented individuals. Even though the department of Electric Engineer-ing has many awards, they received many complaints that there were not having enough independent spaces for practice. To solve this problem, the drone studio was opened in 2019’ s first semester. The drone studio secured a big space, combining two labs to fly a drone. The space provides an environment for comfortable practice, offering a blackboard and personal lockers. Students can freely use the studio when they prepare for competitions, contest exhibits, and group assignments.

The ELEC SHOP was established second semester on the fourth floor of Building 7 and is a place where students can access ingredients and immediately exchange various ideas. Students can borrow components that they need and ingredients for open exhibits or competitions as they would in a store. Students can also get advice about difficult parts from the adviser who resides in the ELEC SHOP.

A student from the department of Electric Engineering (22) who used the ELEC SHOP said, “It is good to be able to borrow material we need when we design and to be able to talk with someone about ideas on starting a business.” Electronics Prof. Jung Hyeon Oh from the ELEC SHOP said: “It shortens time, as we can immediately provide material to students who have ideas and give them feedback. The latter is is the biggest advantage. I feel proud when students get awards in competition.”
