Do you have tips on learning English for the job market, as a head of the Career Development Center?
Studying English is one of the aspects of building up your career. Therefore they mainly learn English to improve TOEIC or TOEFL scores. In fact, the recent trend in the job market is that companies hire new recruits with their ‘letters of self-introduction’, and do not ask for a curriculum vitae. And yet, some enterprises evaluate job candidates based on their resumes. The suggestion that I would like to give is to know how high a score is needed to apply for the job. It is pity that we can’t recommend students because of their scores when corporations send official documents requesting references. So it is important to grasp what the employers want: English test scores, certificates and experience in the specific field and so on. You need to prepare ahead of time, from your freshman year, according to what companies require of the job seekers. It is grueling to try to reach those qualifications when the time approaches.
The Career Development Center (CDC) not only runs the cafe Dream Job but also offers services to support recruitment of Kookminians. The followings are some of the programs that CDC provides:
Mailing Service
The Career Development Center sends e-mails to students once a week. This year, it has been revised to reflect the fact that students often read e-mail on their phones. They can view the contents or download them online. The e-mails give information, according to the year of the student, to help them step onto the career ladder.
Online Website
The Career Development Center has its own online webpage: http://career.kookmin.ac.kr. On the main webpage, students can make an application for counseling and joining Career Camps. They can also take an aptitude test for their job at no cost.
Applications & Interview
The CDC offers a 1:1 resume, self-introduction and Interview Clinic for students who are preparing for a job application in the near future. They can make clinic reservations on the Career Development Center homepage. In addition to these year-round clinics, the CDC will provide consultation programs with professional career consulting companies from time to time.
Recruitment Camp
Recruitment Camp is aimed at those who want to get ready for the spring/summer and fall/winter open recruitment of conglomerates. The camp continues for two days. This two-day camp includes analyzing current recruitment trends, having a simulated job interview with incumbent human resource directors and an applications clinic.
Elite Group Mentoring
CDC invites conglomerates’ current personnel managers for senior students, counseling them in groups of 15 students or so. For three months, this Mentoring Program teaches all job-hunting skills and conducts employment consultation so that students can find a job in their target position early.
